DRESS CODEDRESS FOR SUCCESS

The ATSS dress code has been established for Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School for many reasons.

These reasons include:

• help develop a strong school focus and team spirit • to give you a sense of belonging to a unique school • to discourage competition based on clothing.

You are expected to wear the school dress code. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are wearing the school dress code appropriately and with pride. When you are involved in a school-sponsored event (field trips, public speaking competition, writing workshop, etc.) you must wear the school dress code unless alternate attire is specified for a particular activity such as a school ski trip.

Lets say for instance there is a day when it is 25 or 28 degrees, are we allowed to wear our pe strip if it's really hot out?, our regular school pants get very sweaty if we wear them in the sun all day.

Why do the HS girls wear white t-shirts and the MS girls wear grey? Grey is a more sensible choice primarily because it doesn't reveal undergarments. A little modesty goes a long way.

Todd Clarke: I go to the HS and I don't know what you're referring to as white shirts. If you are talking about the gym t-shirts, they are both white at the HS and MS.

Mohit, Sometimes it can get either very cold or hot and it's difficult to keep comfortable. I can certainly sympathize with your perdicament. When it get's very hot, as you suggest, I wouldn't wear pants. Rather, school coloured shorts or 3/4 lenght pants would be best. As long as they are in school colours and are not made of jean material you should be o.k. In terms of wearing the P.E. strip in classes we are aware that students do this to some degree, but OFFICIALLY ITS NOT ALLOWED AND TEACHERS ARE DISCOURAGED FROM ALLOWING THIS. You might expect an increased focus on this item once all clothing orders have arrived from our supplier. I must admit that it's far better to have a student in branded P.E. wear in class than totally out of dress code, but we have asked that P.E. strip be used only for athletics/physical education classes. The rationale behind this decision is to make sure students don't arrive to class after P.E. in their sweaty gear. Having a policy where those who have it clean can wear branded P.E. clothing and those who don't aren't allowed is complicated and difficult to enforce. Thus, we make a distinction between what clothing is for the class and what clothing is for the court (or field, depending on your sport). Good question, by the way! All the best, J. Parker

Hi Todd, I think "Me" is right. White T's are worn by both girls in the Middle School and Secondary School, but for P.E. I believe girls in MS can wear both white polo shirts and fancier blouses. In the highschool, however, ladies have the choice of black, beigen or red for their class uniform. White Titan T's are the standard for all students in highschool P.E. classes. By the way, to add to your comment regarding the appropriateness of white blouses, you are indeed very wise. Having a white shirt, with anything other than a white undergarment is generally considered inmodest and in bad taste. No offence meant to anyone who inadvertantly has tried this particular clothing combination, but it's a fashion "NO-NO"!! Warmest regards, J. Parker

Hey Jason... Thanks for you response. Perhaps I was a bit unclear in my thoughts. I have a daughter in the HS, and her and her friends aren't that fond of the white t-shirts. When they get wet they become a bit revealing. Perhaps switching to, or allowing a grey t-shirt would be more appropriate. PS. This is an excellent forum. For busy working parents, being able to voice our thoughts and opinions when our schedule permits is a real blessing. Keep up the good work!

Hello Mr. Clarke, I see your point. White can be a revealing colour when wet to be sure. Switching to another school colour (black, red or beige) might be a sensible alternative. Until such time, a suggestion might be for female students to make a practice of wearing a 100% cotton undershirt under their Titanwear P.E. strip. This would make them more comfortable, hopefully.
